I served in the Army.

Durant Kermit (D K) Futrell joined his precious Lela in heaven Friday 3 November 2017. Born in Coleman, Texas, to James W. and Mary Futrell, 27 March 1925. He served the US Army during WWII, wounded December 1944 the Battle of the Bulge, awarded the Purple Heart. He married Lela Ida Bredemeyer 24 November 1945.

He is survived by his son and daughter in law, Gregory D and Normie Futrell, Dallas, Texas; daughter, Barbara Futrell, Seguin, Texas; sister, Dorothy Bridges of Phoenix, Arizona; brother and sister in law, William and Linda Futrell, Midland, Texas; sister in law, Hisako Futrell, Midland, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews; a very good friend, P J Collazo to whom we the family owe a huge thank you for his friendship and help, and last but not least the folks at Caps United Methodist Church, their family of friends just down the road.

Preceded in death by brothers, Harold and Don.

He moved the family to Lagunillas, Venezuela, in 1957, continuing his work in the oil patch, where he was known as “Tall Boy”, eventually retiring from Raytheon after returning to Abilene in 1962/1963, with productive years at Hendrick Hospital and Timex. His love for horses and a farm like atmosphere and the country directed his and Lela’s move from Abilene proper to their long-time home near Caps, Texas in the early seventies.

Visitation for friends and family will be Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from 5:00 till 7:00 PM at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Thursday, November 9, 2017 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow the service in Elmwood Memorial Park with Military Honors.

    Amazing Grace

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I'm found.
Was blind, but now I see.

'Twas grace that taught my heart to feel
    And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
    The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers toils and snares
    We have already come
'Twas grace that brought us safe that far
And grace will lead us home

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
    Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
    Than when we’d first begun.

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I'm found.
Was blind, but now I see

To Greg/Normie, Barbara. We are very sorry to hear/read about Uncle D. K.'s passing!! He and my late Aunt Lela were 'always' good and kind to me and my Family!! I have loved them both for as far back, and as long as I can remember!! Aunt Lela used to change my diaper's when I was a baby. They got married a year and 3 weeks after I was born!! And we 'always' enjoyed being around them every year at the Bredemeyer Family Reunions!! Plus all of the times my Family went to visit them when they lived in town in Abilene!! And, I did 'not' know that Uncle D.K was a Purple Heart recipient!! May GOD be with 'each' and every one of the Family, and his many friends!! We are sorry that we will 'not' be able to be at any of the Services!! I love you Greg/Normie/Barbara Futrell!! Cousin Ronny Bredemeyer, and wife Janet Bredemeyer . We Celebrate Uncle D.K.'S Life, Mourn his passing, and Rejoice that he has made it home in Heaven!! And will see him 'again' someday!! Again, may GOD bless 'each' of you!!
